Thousands of Turks are overjoyed for his role in having
Iranian-born Turkish businessman Reza Zarrab arrested.
Bharara’s Twitter followers
multiplied overnight to
272,000 after he tweeted the
news of Zarrab’s arrest. The
arrest announcement tweets
were re-tweeted more than
62,000 times and were favorited by 100,000.
Zarrab was in Miami on a holiday when Bharara and his
team were quick to have him apprehended on charges of
aiding the Iranian government in evading economic sanctions and to launder a fortune in Turkey.
Zarrab was also part of the financial scandal that rocked
the Recep Tayyip Erdogan-led Turkish government in 2013.
The businessman was handcuffed in the US for bribing the
top echelons of that government including close contacts of
then prime minister now president Erdogan. The same
charges didn’t stick in Turkey because of Zarrab’s friends in
high places; the prosecutors were penalized. The Turks are
hoping Zarrab’s arrest will lead to the downfall of the now
massively unpopular Erdogan.
Way to go, Preet!
