leander Paes and Martina Hingis became the first duo since 1969 to win three Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles in the same season when they won the US Open
title September 11.
lee and Martina won the Australian Open and
Wimbledon titles earlier this year.
The fourth seeds had a tough final against the unseeded
Americans Sam Querrey and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in the end.
‘I am fortunate to have leander as my partner,’ Hingis
said after the final.
‘Martina is a legend on and off the court,’ lee said. ‘She`s
my best friend. She`s just fantastic.’
Paes, who won the US Open junior title in 1991, is the
men’s player with the highest number of mixed-doubles
titles in the Open era.
He has won nine Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles, sur-
passing former partner Mahesh Bhupathi’s record of eight
Gran Slam mixed-doubles titles.
Only the legendary Martina Navratilova, who
won 10 mixed-doubles titles, is ahead of him.
Two of Martina’s mixed-doubles titles were won
with Paes at her side – they won the Australian
Open and Wimbledon titles in 2003.
More than technique, Paes said it is his never-say-die spirit that has got him success.
‘Martina said something that was quite interesting. She said “You have to have the guts to go
after something.” I don’t believe that I personally have the technique or the calibre of talent that
Martina has. One thing I do have is the guts,’
lee said soon after he won the US Open title.
‘I will go for it. It’s been part of my whole life…
It is about perseverance, just trying to find a way
to succeed,’ Paes, who turned 42 June 17, said.
Chemistry, he added, is the key to any partner-
ship. ‘Sometimes the chips are against you,
sometimes they fool you. What I love about this
teamwork is that in any partnership there’s got
to be one person who brings the energy to the
team. There’s got to be one person who takes all
the pressure on their shoulder and drives the
‘I know if I can keep Martina happy, if I can
keep her relaxed, the tennis I don’t even have to
worry about. This young girl is phenomenal on
the tennis court and off of it,’ he said.

put up a good show for India.’
