On the occasion of the historic visit of Hon. Prime Minister
Shri Narendra Modi to USA, I greet all our countrymen and
People of Indian Origin across the globe, members and office
bearers of GOPIO and the Indian American community.
India has a very sound, steady and growing relationship with
USA and its people. America hosts the largest Indian Diaspora
presence and India is mindful of the vital role played by the
Indian-American community and their love for India.
I commend GOPIO’s initiative on this special supplement of
the prestigious newspaper “India Abroad” to commemorate the
visit of Hon. PM of India, highlighting strengths of Indo-US partnership and role of Indian Diaspora.
The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs firmly believes in the
strength and resilience of the Indian Diaspora. The Ministry is

with its extensive global reach and staunchly advocating concerns, interests and aspirations of the Indian Diaspora.

We hope to infuse more energy into trade and investment partnership, expand relations in security, defense and counter terrorism; strengthen people to people ties in education and skills up-gradation, and deepen cooperation in health, science and technology.
The Indian American community is an important bridge
between US and India, and we seek its support to explore the full
potential of India-US relationship. The community remains our
source of strength as we consolidate significant progress we have
achieved in our bilateral ties.
I hope this supplement in India Abroad highlights the role of
Indian diaspora in USA and globally, its successes and contributions, and inspire young Indian Americans to continue to play
important roles in prompting India-US ties. I wish GOPIO and its
office bearers great success in their endeavors.
I welcome the special supplement by GOPIO commemorating the historic visit of Hon. Prime Minister of India to
USA in India Abroad, a most respected publication.
GOPIO is the most prominent organization representing
overseas Indians, engaging the Indian diaspora globally.
The visit of Hon. Prime Minister is an occasion to celebrate the relationship between our two countries, with
special significance as American leadership, politicians,
businessmen and people come to know more about his
vision of our strategic partnership.
This is one of India’s strongest partnerships as bilateral
relations have grown from strength to strength in the last
few decades. Recent visits of US Secretaries of State,
Defense and Commerce indicate close dialogue between
the two countries with strong bond and understanding.
On the economic side, USA is among India’s largest partners with trade reaching
US$100 billion, large inflows of investment from the US, growing Indian IT community’s presence in US as well as growing number of technical and other collaborations. On the strategic side too, several Government-to-Government working groups
interact on matters related to space, energy, defense, security and other fields.
The Indian community in USA has emerged with strong family values, hard work,
love for education and high aspirations. Their accomplishments are recognized in
various fields such as academia, literature, science and technology, corporate world
and media. They are also engaged in giving back to India through its social, economic
and cultural contributions.
Greetings to the Indian community and those who are actively involved in building
India-US relations. My heartfelt compliments to GOPIO and India Abroad for pub-
lishing this timely supplement.
On behalf of GOPIO, I welcome Hon. Prime Minister Modi to
USA, and I congratulate him on the overwhelming mandate in
the recent elections.
GOPIO is engaged in promoting the well being of over 28 million of the Indian Diaspora, and has been organizing conferences
in various parts of the world to network the Indian community
to bring the globally spread Indian community closer to mother
India and strengthen the inherent bonds of history, heritage, culture and tradition.
GOPIO has been lobbying for issues and concerns of the overseas Indian community to the government of India, governments of countries where NRIs/PIOs live and to various world
forums, such as United Nations.
Over 3.5 million Indian Americans constitute the driving force
of closer relations between the people of India and the people of
USA. They have been a valuable asset for India and have contributed their due share in India’s emergence as an economic
There is an extra-ordinarily high level of excitement and anticipation among Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian
Origin (PIOs) in USA about the visit of India’s Prime Minister
Hon. Narendra Modi to USA. It is a unique time in the history of
the partnership between India and USA with many opportunities
to strengthen the relationship on several fronts while doing so
with respect, consideration of present and emerging trends, as
well as recognition of realities. The growing partnership between
India and USA is poised for an historic alliance between equals.
There is a highly visible sense of euphoria among NRIs/PIOs in
USA about the recent political change in India, anticipation of
stronger partnership between India and USA, as well as mutual
interest of India and USA for regional and global peace. India-USA relationship potentially can be the cornerstone of much
needed global strategic interests and regional stability, tremendously beneficial to both India and USA.
There is also a strong interest among NRIs/PIOs in USA for
more progress in India internally for good governance, accountability at all levels, quality edu-
cation to all children, health services, clean water supply, updated sanitation and social servic-
es, equitable treatment of women and children, uplifting the poor and downtrodden and tak-
ing pride in quality of services.
As the premiere global advocacy Indian diaspora organization, GOPIO looks forward and
supports more progress to strengthen the partnership between India and USA.
