We usually avoid slinging mud at other publications — you know hat they say about glass houses — but The Timesof India has really gone too far this time. It began when the online section of
the ‘world’s largest newspaper’ tweeted a video with the headline: ‘OMG!
Deepika Padukone’s cleavage show.’ The star wasn’t amused, and shot back: ‘Supposedly India’s ‘LEADING’ newspaper
and this is ‘NEWS’!!??. YES! I am a Woman. I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??” She also wrote an
angry Facebook post about how any reel portrayal should not be seen as a star’s real image.
The issue should have been laid to rest there, but ToI published a lengthy front-page rebuttal on its supplement
Bombay Times, with Deepika’s revealing photographs, and her cleavage marked out with circles and arrows.
The crux of the newspaper’s argument was that here was a ‘calendar girl’ and she didn’t have any right to object to
objectification of her body! No one was amused.
Britain’s The Guardian’s Women’s Blog ran a headline: ‘Boobs aren’t news, but try telling that to the Times of India,’
while The Independent picked up another sexist article in ToI’s online avatar. ‘Angelina Jolie and Bollywood stars targeted: ‘Hot babes with ugly legs’ Times of India article sparks ‘body shaming’ anger,’ screamed The Independent’s
headline. We’re with Deepika on this one.
