Juvenile rapist cannot be tried twice
The federal government told India’s Supreme Court
January 7 that the law did not allow the juvenile, convicted
in the December 16, 2012, gang-rape, to be tried twice for
the same offence.
The victim’s parents had demanded his retrial by a criminal court.
The juvenile, who was six months short of 18 years at the
time of incident, was convicted for gang-rape and murder
of the 23-year-old physiotherapist, but got away with a
maximum of three years imprisonment mandated under
the juvenile law by the Juvenile Justice Board.
Nagaland ethnic violence claims 9
Nine people, allegedly belonging to the Karbi tribe of
Assam, were massacred and their bodies retrieved by the
police in Nagaland January 3. The police said the victims
had been blindfolded with their hands tied behind and shot
in the head.
