Indo American Friends Group fetes Indu Jaiswal
Indu Jaiswal was recently conferred the Pride of India award by the Indo American Friends Group. Former
Indian minister Dr Karan Singh pre-
sented the award to Jaiswal at an event
held in New Delhi.
Among the attendees to the event
were Dr Ajai P Misra, chairman, IAFG;
Gautam A Rana, deputy counselor for
political affairs at the United States
embassy in Delhi; and Meghalaya
Deputy Chief Minister B M Lanong.
During the India-Pakistan war of
1965, Jaiswal collected money for
Indian troopers. She arrived in the US
in 1973, and started community service
with the Welcome Wagon Club in
Garden City, New York.
An alumna of the University of Delhi,
Jaiswal continued her studies at the
Promenade Rehabilitation and Health
izen programs at the Bethpage Senior
Community Center.
The Indian American Night at Eisen-
hower Park in East Meadow, which she
helped to start, has become part of the
summer concert series sponsored by the
Nassau County Department of Parks
and recreation. She also launched a kite
festival there in 2008.
The Republic Day celebrations she
launched at the Town Hall of
Hempstead in 2002 has become a
major event over the years. She was one
of the community members to testify in
favor of a bill presented to the New York
City Council to suspend alternate side
parking regulations in recognition of
Diwali celebrations.
Jaiswal was president, India Asso-
ciation of Long Island, and served as sec-
retary, Federation of Indian Associations
in New York, New Jersey and
Connecticut.
Among the awards she has won are
