CLASSICS & REMAKES M10
Why I did Agneepath
You worked with Sanjay Dutt
in Mission Kashmir, too. What’s your
Can Sanjay Dutt look any badder? As Kancha Cheena, left, he faces Hrithik's Vijay Dinanath Chavan. He says that in trying to be as menacing as possible he scared himself
I call him Sanju Sir because he really
has become a ‘sir’ in a way. When I
reached Diu, I was so tired because
of Just Dance ( the Indian television real-
ity show, which he judged) and my other
endorsements, that I did not get time to
train and build my body. Sanju Sir just
took over: He built a gym over there, he
asked me to start at 7 am, and he took
care of my food with the help of his cook
and his staff.
He is like an older brother. When I was
tired he kept telling me, I am 50 years old
and I am still going strong. I would get
embarrassed and keep going.
Sanju Sir has one amazing quality: You
don’t feel he is putting in any effort or
even cares what’s going on. In fact, you
feel he is not bothered. He makes it look
very easy, but he is into his character.
There was Gabbar Singh (Sholay), then
Mogambo (Mr India) and now it will be
Do you think Kancha will overpower
People should like him better at the
beginning of the film and they should
think that a fight between Kancha and
Vijay is impossible. They should feel that
Vijay is nothing in front of Kancha, and
then the trajectory of the film should con-
vince the audience of the David-Goliath
If you think the mission is impossible,
that makes the film more entertaining. If
it is easy and if we are equals, you won’t
enjoy the journey.
How was it working with Priyanka
Chopra ( after Krrish)?
This is Priyanka’s best work till date.
She will really make you cry. It is a small
role, but she has done such a fabulous
job. Her character Kali is such a sweet
character. She makes you see Vijay
through her eyes, and when you see him
that way you fall in love with Vijay.
Katrina Kaif’s Chikni Chameli is very
popular. Shouldn’t you have been part of
I thought that way before the song was
shot. The moment Katrina came on the
sets and rehearsed, if you were there, you
would have also said, ‘Don’t make Hrithik
dance; we want to watch Katrina.’ What
you are seeing in the promos is just 5 per-
cent of what she has done in the song.
After Madhuri (Dixit), Ash (Aishwarya
Rai) and now Katrina, I have been impressed (only) three
times. I knew she was a good dancer but I didn’t know she
was so marvelous. All the steps are so difficult.
She comes from the UK and she does… a kind
of lavani (the Maharashtrian folk dance). She just threw
herself into it.
How was it working with Rishi Kapoor, who has worked
with your father (Khel Khel Mein)?
Working with Chintu uncle was amazing. He did so many
action scenes. He would fall in a scene and get up as though
nothing had happened and there I was sitting with my knee
When the show was over, I got my first day off, October 2
Forever. I would want to do it with grey hair too. Why not?
Shah Rukh tried to make a superhero film, but RA.One
did not do too well. What do you think went wrong?
and back pain, applying balm. He was so fit! I thought what
my state would be when I am that age if I am hurting so
much now. I was very impressed. He is like an athlete,
though you cannot make that out when you see him.
The amount of confidence that Chintu uncle has I doubt
any other actor will have. Maybe Shah Rukh Khan does. But
the confidence and the fire of Rishi Kapoor is something
You were unwell during the shoot.
I fell sick during the last few days of Just Dance. I had a
severe backache. I could not stop work, so I kept going.
I think the drawback is always at the level of the script;
there is nothing more important than the script… You cannot pick things from other films which you think looked
good, or worked well in that film.
When Papa was writing the script for Krissh, I thought it
was an old idea, but he kept going. He did not change it at
all. When the script reached the climax, it turned out to be
mind-blowing and only then I understood why he wrote
what he did in the beginning. It is the best script to date.
You have been nominated for best actor for Zindagi Na
Milegi Dobara at several Indian film awards. Do you care
If someone is giving you an award, you should respect
it and be humble and thank them. But if you don’t win an
award that does not mean your work is not good. In my
mind I have a barometer and I know which of my films
I feel my work in Guzaarish is good. I felt very honest
in that film, and now I always try to reach that level
when I am facing the camera. There was a comfort in the
flow; I was so much into my character that it became
easy for me to do my role.
In every film of mine I want to try and achieve that
because that is my benchmark. There are films in which
I think I haven’t done so well but I have got an award.
Which of your characters is closest to your heart?
I think Ethan from Guzaarish. Whoever performed
that role would have had to be that real because you meet
people who are ill like that and when you meet them you
have to feel real in your heart.
Is there any genre that you want to do?
I want to do comedy. But I want to do serious comedy
and no one writes that kind of humor any more. The
actor must be very honest with the character. It should
not be slapstick comedy where I make faces to make
I want to do a Ben Stiller kind of comedy. If you have
seen his films, you will notice that whatever happens to
him is very funny, but he is very serious in the film. He is
nervous, he is scared, he doesn’t know what to do, but he
is honest. He is not making faces to make you laugh.
Everyone starts writing that kind of film but when
finances come into it, it becomes slapstick.
Are you ever going to direct a film, like your father?
I don’t think so.
Have you got any Hollywood offers?
Why should I go there when there is such a big audience here in India? ;
