After seeing the outstanding pictures and
write-ups on Shammi Kapoor’s death on
Corruption not our fault
I am really very surprised to read the letter by Jay K
Raman on corruption in India (August 26, 2011).
Shame on you
I have been a regular subscriber to your weekly for a
long time and have always profited from your reports,
articles, and general coverage of Indians in their home-
land as well as in the Diaspora.
However, the ‘cover girl’ in the August 19 issue must
have been humiliating to her and has infuriated to some
of your readers, including me.
This photograph and the accompanying gleeful analyses
of America’s economic ordeal vis-a-vis India’s bright eco-
nomic future remind me of the familiar adage that even a
little black ant can irritate a mammoth stuck in the mire.
I suggest the photographer concerned should write an
apology to the unsuspecting woman who has been made
to look like a mascot for ‘sinking’ America. That the head-
line, United Sinking America, appears at a time the entire
northeast is literally drowned by Hurricane Irene, pours
salt on our wounds. Shame on you!

Bidwai for his article, ‘How 20 Years of Neoliberalism
