Sunk ship sparks environment scare
The Indian navy and Coast Guard rescued 30 crew members from a cargo
vessel, MV RAK, even as 3/4th of the 225 meter-long vessel sank into the
choppy waters of the Arabian Sea, 20 nautical miles off Mumbai, August 4.
The bulk carrier was on its way from Lubuk Tutung in Indonesia to Dahej in
Gujarat to deliver more than 60,000 tonnes of coal, 291 tonnes of fuel oil and
50 tonnes of diesel. Experts say if the cargo seeps into the sea it could have a
dangerous effect on marine life.
