BJP June 1. Earlier, a recommendation by
Governor H R Bhardwaj to impose President’s
rule — in the wake of the Supreme Court
striking down the disqualification of 11 BJP
rebel legislators and five Independents — had
been rejected by the federal government.
Maharashtra ups legal drinking age to 25
The Maharashtra government last week
increased the legal age for drinking liquor in
the state from 21 to 25 years. The restriction
pertains to hard liquor like rum, gin, whisky,
vodka and country-made alcohol while the
legal age for the consumption of mild beer has
been fixed at 21 years. The provisions are a
part of the government’s new de-addiction pol-
icy.
BJP leaders to visit Washington
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley
will lead a party delegation to Washington, DC
later this month. This will be the first high-
level contact between India's main opposition
party and the US in years. The BJP's relation-
ship with Washington had soured after the
party opposed the US-India nuclear deal.

Mayawati announces new land acquisition policy
Uttar Pradesh has announced a new land acquisi-
tion policy under which its role in acquiring land for
private developers will only be that of a facilitator.
Chief Minister Mayawati, who held a town-hall-style
meeting with farmers, announced that the new policy
will be implemented immediately and developers will
be acquiring land directly from the farmers.
President rejects proposal to sack minister
Indian President Pratibha Patil has rejected
the Delhi Lokayukta’s recommendation to sack the
state’s Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar
Chauhan for his alleged involvement in protecting a
leading resort in a tax evasion case. The home min-
istry conveyed the President’s decision to the
Lokayukta in writing.
