Bohras celebrate leader’s 100th birthday
His Holiness. We are lucky to have a
leader like him at the helm, and pray
for his good health and long life,” said
Ali Dhoon, secretary, Anjuman-E-Badri. Dhoon will travel to Mumbai
with other community members to
mark the Syedna’s birthday celebrations.
The Dawoodi Bohras are a one million strong Shiite Muslim sect across
the world, whose belief systems originated in Egypt and Yemen, and with
its center of leadership in Mumbai.
The Syedna visited the community
center in New York in 2004 and the
West Coast in 2005.
The procession was followed by a
fair at the Jamali community center,
where community members set up
stalls showcasing traditional attire.
Dawoodi Bohra women wear colorful outfits called ridas, often decorated with sequins and lace, while
men dress in largely white clothing,
which include a hat (topi) woven
with golden and white threads, a
coat (saya) and a kurta. There were
stalls devoted to jewelry, food,
games and free medical consultations. The educational exhibition earlier paid tribute to
the Syedna’s life and work.
The Dawoodi Bohra community celebrated the 100th birthday of its spiritual leader, Dr Syedna Mohammed
Burhanuddin, with a procession, a fair
and an educational exhibition.
The New York Bohra community’s
head priest, or aamilsaheb, Janaab
Behlul Bhaisaheb Hashemi led the
procession of hundreds of followers
dressed in traditional attire down
Springfield Boulevard in Queens.
“Every year, the Dawoodi Bohra
community in New York celebrates
His Holiness’ birthday with great joy
and love for our leader. And this year
being a historic milestone, makes it
even more special for each of us,” said
Janaab Hashemi, the aamilsaheb of
Anjuman-e-Badri, the non-profit
group that manages the needs of the
New York Dawoodi Bohra community,

“His Holiness is not only our leader
but is also our religious, spiritual and
