Outgoing American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin president Vinod ‘Vinny’ K Shah’s close friend and neighbor House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer got Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to deliver
the kick-off keynote address at the AAPI convention.
Sebelius was lavish in showering kudos on AAPI and in
exhorting the organization to play a catalytic role in making
President Obama’s health-care reform agenda a reality.
“There is no question that AAPI is playing an enormously
important role in our country in building the health of the
American people in delivering critical health care,” she said.
“The over 52,000 Indian-American physicians are irre-
placeable, and not only serve key roles in our department —
so I get to see everyday what kind of a contribution is made
— but we see them across this country in areas from health
delivery, health information technology to public health
research. It’s an extraordinary contribution and one that is
invaluable. You keep our families healthy, our workforce pro-
ductive, and our communities strong and continue to play an
active role in strengthening health for all Americans, and we
BECOME A DOCTOR.
